The International Organization for Standardization (www.iso.org) defines ISO 9001:2000 as “the standard that provides a set of standardized requirements for a Quality Management System (Q.M.S.), regardless of what the user organization does, its size, or whether it is in the private, or public sector. It is the only standard in the family against which organizations can be certified – although certification is not a compulsory requirement of the standard.” ISO 9001:2000 imposes the requirements for an effective quality system, but does not dictate the means of how they should be implemented. This confers large flexibility and intrinsic consistency for implementation in various business areas and diversified management environments, as well as in different national cultures.
